Why We Built Journali (And Why Every Other Trading Journal Felt Broken)

Every existing trading journal was either too expensive, too slow, or too ugly. So we built Journali — the one we actually wanted to use.

The Spreadsheet Phase

Before Journali existed, we did what every trader does: opened a Google Sheet, added 12 columns, and told ourselves this was the year we'd finally get serious about journaling.

Two weeks in, the streak broke. A busy trading morning, three back-to-back trades, no time to log. "I'll catch up tonight." Tonight never came. By week four, the sheet was half-filled, the columns were inconsistent, and every time we opened it we felt guilty instead of informed.

The spreadsheet phase is where most traders quit journaling. It's not because they're lazy. It's because the tool creates friction in exactly the moments they can least afford it.

The $99/Month Desktop Software Phase

So we tried the "professional" options. Edgewonk. Tradervue. TraderSync. Tradezella.

Some of them are genuinely good software. But they all share some combination of these problems:

What We Actually Wanted

We started Journali by writing down what we actually wanted in a trading journal, in a single paragraph:

"A trading journal I can log to from my phone in thirty seconds, that tells me the truth about my trading, that syncs my broker automatically, that has AI coaching that references MY data not generic advice, that costs less than $30/month, and that doesn't feel like a billing funnel at every click."

That one paragraph was the whole product brief. Everything else followed from it.

The Design Principles

Speed is the feature

If logging a trade takes more than 30 seconds, people stop doing it. So every form, every button, every interaction is optimized for speed. The trade entry form is a single scroll. Quick Log finishes in 15 seconds. No tabs. No modals. No "confirm save" dialogs. Just log and go.

Be honest about the plan

Free is not a trial. Free is a real plan with 6 lifetime trades so you can genuinely evaluate the product. Pro is $20. Premier is $30. No annual-only lock-in, no "call for enterprise pricing," no hidden upsells. What you see is what you pay.

AI that references your actual data

The AI Trade Coach reads your specific trade — setup, entry, exit, emotion, notes — and gives you feedback on THAT trade. Not generic advice. It knows if you've been revenge trading this week because it has access to the last month of your data. It catches patterns a human coach would charge $200/hour for.

Mobile-first, not mobile-afterthought

Every page was designed on a 390px viewport first, then scaled up. That's the opposite of how most trading software is built. The result is that Journali feels native on your phone — because it was designed for your phone.

One code base, every platform

Journali is a Progressive Web App. Add it to your phone's home screen from Safari or Chrome and it behaves like a native app. No App Store approval cycles. No "update required" prompts. When we ship an improvement, you have it on your next page load.

What We Chose NOT to Build

Every decision about what to build is also a decision about what NOT to build. We said no to:

Some of those would probably make us more money short-term. None of them would make Journali a better trading journal.

The Result, Eighteen Months In

Journali today has active users spanning every market — futures scalpers, options sellers, prop firm evaluation traders, swing traders in stocks and forex. The AI Trade Coach has logged tens of thousands of feedback cycles. The prop firm mode has caught dozens of would-be soft breaches before they happened. And the average time from "create account" to "first trade logged" is under three minutes.

More importantly, our users keep telling us the same thing: "Journali is the first journal I've actually used consistently." That's the only metric that matters.
