What is position sizing?

Position sizing is how you translate your account size and risk tolerance into the exact number of shares, contracts, or units to buy on any given trade. It's the single most important risk management decision you make — more important than the entry, the setup, or the exit.

Most traders get this wrong. They pick a number of shares that "feels right" based on how confident they are, which means winning trades and losing trades end up risking wildly different amounts. That's how accounts blow up on a single bad trade.

The 1% rule

Professional traders almost universally risk 0.5% to 2% of their account per trade — most sit at 1%. At 1% risk, you'd need to lose 10 trades in a row to drop ~10% of your account. That's statistically rare for any strategy with a real edge, which means you live to keep trading even through a rough stretch.

Journal every trade so you know your real edge

Once you're sizing correctly, the next step is tracking which setups actually make money. Journali auto-tags every trade by setup and shows your real win rate, avg R, and P&L patterns.
